The Role: Research Specialist, ESG Controversy Analysis

The Team:

The ESG Controversy team aims to develop, support, and maintain S&P´s monitoring of companies' sustainability performance daily by assessing controversies with potentially negative environmental or social impacts that can pose reputational, or financial consequences for companies. We are considered a leader in ESG analytics, providing essential intelligence to corporates and financial institutions.

We are searching for people who are passionate about sustainability and would like to join a project-focused, international team of like-minded people, driven to deliver excellence in managing the world’s most known family of sustainability indices and one of the leading corporate sustainability benchmarking methodologies.

Your Responsibilities & Impact:

  • Analyze, create, and assess corresponding cases arising from criticism of the company in media/ news

  • Monitor and read news on corporate controversies on a daily basis

  • Write a well-prepared narrative providing relevant details of the controversy that will be sent to companies for their review and input

  • Create a sound assessment of the controversy and impact the company based on MSA's proprietary methodology

  • Collaborate with different stakeholders to finalize the assessment and score to be presented to a group of senior leaders for implementation

  • Support the writing of periodic reports of a company's involvement in MSA cases

Developed over 22 years, our work contributes to the creation of the iconic Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) and the S&P 500® ESG index, among many others. Our work is also used by investors to execute their respective responsible investment strategies such as in the creation of impact and thematic funds. The work intelligence produced by our department is leveraged throughout S&P Global’s ESG products across its divisions.

What We’re Looking For:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Academic Qualifications – Bachelor’s/Master’s degree or equivalent; an advanced degree in a related field is welcome

  • 3+ years of experience in ESG research. ESG Controversy research is an advantage

  • For applicants with no Controversy Analysis background, expertise in Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, Healthcare and Materials sectors are welcome to apply

  • Strong research skills with an emphasis on fact-based insights and analysis. This includes the ability to write well-prepared research and accurate assessments in accordance with our proprietary methodology

  • Effective reading skills to consume daily news literature, curiosity to learn and work on the latest ESG controversies affecting companies

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Effective critical and analytical thinking

  • Collaborative attitude across different locations and willingness to contribute to initiatives aimed at enhancing our ESG product

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of basic concepts of supply chain, retail and franchise ownership model.

  • Skills in Excel (macros) or Qlik or Tableau or SQL or BI Tools.
