The Role:

S&P Global Platts is looking for a frontline reporter to drive Sub-Saharan Africa - Middle East Metals and Mining news coverage. Based in London, the responsibilities of this position include writing about tier-1 mining giants such as Anglo American and BHP Billiton, as well as metals and related commodities markets in these dynamic and fast-growing regional economies. This individual will produce news content and analysis, while engaging with global market participants on a daily basis.

The successful candidate will be part of a global team. This individual must be comfortable reporting market-moving information and interpreting data. The finalist will be considered a subject matter expert in the industry; being a team player is of utmost importance.

The successful candidate will be part of the S&P Global team, based at our corporate headquarters in London.

Your Skills:

The successful candidate will possess significant newsgathering and business reporting experience. Prior exposure to international financial and commodities markets is preferred. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Powerpoint, Outlook and Excel is a must, as is the ability to speak and write in English.

Responsibilities:

Primary responsibility will be reporting on the companies and individuals driving major business developments in Sub-Saharan Africa - Middle East Metals and Mining markets. This will include producing breaking news in real time and generating value-added analysis of market trends during the course of coverage. Writing copy, producing graphics and publishing data that explains the factors driving market dynamics will be part of the daily process. Our commodities news teams in Europe, Asia and the US are in frequent contact throughout each business day, as the regional markets are influenced and impacted by breaking news in other regions.

Secondary responsibilities will include managing and building our database of contacts, identifying opportunities to improve our commodities news coverage and representing Platts at industry events such as conferences or in face-to-face meetings - further establishing Platts as a leading provider of commodities news, pricing and data. The candidate also will have opportunities to present at conferences, conduct webinars and podcasts or external media interviews. The candidate may be called on to assist with creating or editing content for other Platts publications, as well.

Accountability includes:

  • Gathering, verifying and publishing commodities news and interacting with global markets

    • Writing frequent analysis - feature stories
  • Developing and expanding coverage of the global metals sector

  • Serving as point of contact for internal and external audiences in providing context around the copy, graphics and data we publish

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor s degree or equivalent is required

    • Proven reporting - writing - editing skills and previous experience covering commodities and business markets
  • Excellent spoken English and writing skills

  • Superior communication skills with the ability to converse articulately across a wide range of groups and personalities, internally and externally

  • Proven analytical ability and comfortable handling numbers

  • Understanding of general math, economics and statistics.

  • Ability to apply math functions in Excel
