The Role:

S&P Global is seeking an energetic, business-minded and self-motivated attorney with 7 years of ERISA and employee benefits experience gained at a leading national or regional law firm and - or in-house (ideally at a publicly-traded company) to join its corporate legal team.

This position rolls up to the Associate General Counsel & Corporate Secretary. You will work collaboratively with members of the company s HR and Benefits teams at S&P Global s 55 Water Street headquarters, as well as the company s offices around the world, to provide critical advice and support on a wide array of ERISA and employee benefits matters and projects. You ll also work independently within a dynamic, client-facing environment, as part of a lean, horizontally structured legal team, with sole responsibility for advising on all legal matters related to benefit plan design, interpretation and compliance, as well as the administration of the company s wide variety of domestic and global benefits plans.

This position supports a business of over $6 billion in revenue with 20,000 employees located around the world.

The Impact:

  • Provide ongoing, day-to-day legal guidance and support to members of the company s HR and Benefits teams on all employee benefit matters for the company s domestic and global workforce

  • Assist the company in complying with federal and state laws impacting employee benefits plans, including advising on ERISA, HIPAA, the Affordable Care Act, COBRA and federal tax compliance

  • Assist with responses to regulatory inquiries and ERISA plan participants claims for benefits and appeals from adverse claims determinations.


  • Advise on questions arising out of the design, interpretation, compliance and operation of a wide variety of domestic and global benefits plans, including tax-qualified and non-qualified retirement plans, deferred compensation plans, fringe benefit plans, and health and welfare benefit plans.

  • Draft, review and maintain benefit plan documents and participant communications, including SPDs and SMMs.

  • Provide support for benefits issues related to mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and restructurings, including assisting the benefits team in conducting due diligence, evaluating plan-related risks and managing post-transaction plan integration and administration.

  • Review and advise on annual required disclosures for employee benefit plans, including IRS 5500 reporting and any other tax filings and required ERISA disclosures.

  • Review, evaluate and assist with the negotiation of agreements with third-party administrators and benefit service providers.

  • Monitor new legislation and regulatory changes impacting employee benefits administration.

  • Manage outside counsel relationships as engaged to support the above-listed responsibilities.


  • Must be admitted, active and in good standing with the New York State bar.

  • Candidate must have exceptional business judgment, legal issue identification and problem-solving skills.

  • Requires a practical, business-oriented approach to problem-solving; candidate must be able to effectively counsel internal clients by providing them with clear, concise and commercial advice, and creative solutions where necessary, on established timelines to meet their business needs.

  • Candidate must be able to operate autonomously while being a team player who brings a positive, can do attitude to the workplace and works collaboratively with other members of the Legal team and with internal clients.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant advisory experience.

  • J.D. from top law school with exceptional academic credentials.
